SHE PERSISTED: RUBY BRIDGES
I wrote a book with Chelsea Clinton for her She Persisted series, on Ruby Bridges, who was the first Black child to integrate William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1960. Ruby was six years old, in first grade, when she became a nationally-known heroine of the civil rights movement as she faced down angry, segregationist crowds in order to attend school every day.

My Writing Process!
I write at home, in coffee shops, while traveling….basically anywhere! Ideally, I love a cozy armchair, a big mug of tea, and a view of leafy trees.
If you’re interested in writing, here are some resources to check out:
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)
My Travels!
I travel for school and library visits, as well as for fun. If you’re interested in bringing me to your school or community, check out my speaking appearances page.
My Pottery!
I am a beginning potter, and it’s a creative outlet that I really enjoy. I’m still a learner, and if you are too, my favorite resource for free pottery classes is ClayShare, run by veteran potter Jessica Putnam Phillips.
My Knitting!
I don’t actually post that much knitting, but I’m a moderately good knitter, and I enjoy it having something to do with my hands in lectures, watching TV, on long plane flights, and when casually gathered with friends and listening to readings or stories. One great resource and community for knitters is Ravelry. Check it out!
